I adored this piece of yours on Oppenheimer, the movie, the man and his era. "American Prometheus" is indeed a revelation and I hope you were able to finish it. Your voice is haunting and refreshingly humanistic to a non-scientist like me. I'm so old-school I still love the novels of C.P. Snow, partly because he was a humanist/scientist like you. Your review of "Oppenheimer" was the first review I read when I stumbled upon your Substack. And thank you for reading this. I am hoping to finish Prometheus before the New Year. My TBR is overflowing and is quite embarrassing at this moment. Snow's lecture The Two Cultures has been such an inspiration lately as I am trying to write a book in the humanist/scientist way (not sure am getting anywhere) but am terribly chuffed to hear the word "haunting". It's not everyday I get to hear such a thing. Thank you :)
So glad you already knew my "Oppenheimer" review. Beyond thrilled that you can still see some relevance in The Two Cultures, both the original lecture and the discussions that followed. I think it's still relevant today, though I'd be the first to acknowledge that the gulf between science and the humanities is wider than ever. And the humanities in colleges and universities are shrinking, fewer students majoring in them, fewer professors hired to teach them. Much work for people like you and me to do. I'm pleased we're comrades in arms! :<))
Wider than ever indeed! I for one pivoted during the pandemic disillusioned by the gulf (silly me trying to become a writer). The hyperspecialization of fields has been inevitable but so much has been lost on the way to achieve the scientific wonders. The soil, the water, the air. I am so glad to have met you here.
